Field Notes:  Art, Photography, and Storytelling

A finished website can look effortless, but every functional page rests on countless creative and technical decisions. Building Farmstracts taught me to recognize the art - and the people - behind the interface.

Before Farmstracts became four worlds, it was years of scattered skills, abandoned ideas, hard lessons, and creative work that did not yet seem connected. Looking back, I can see that none of it was wasted.

My thoughts rarely arrive as finished sentences. AI can help me shape them into words - but sometimes a smoother sentence is a worse version of what I meant. The challenge is knowing when to accept the polish and when to keep the rough edge.

I went looking for music and found myself wondering how much AI I was really hearing. That simple question led somewhere unexpected - into songs, artists, technology, and what "AI made it" really means.

We rarely know the whole story behind something that has been discarded. An object may arrive at the end of one story and, unexpectedly, become part of another. Sometimes it may even become art.

Two days at the Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run took me from quietly photographing vehicles at Janssen Park to showing their owners how I had reimagined them atop Rich Mountain.

An old wooden fan became a butterfly, but the transformation began with the camera. The photograph preserved the worn details that allowed me to recognize the wings hiding in its shape.

A polished AI-assisted image can appear in seconds, but the finished result cannot show how much human judgment came before it. This Field Note asks what the artist contributes - and what honesty requires.
