In the Wake of a Wingbeat
Photographed from my front porch on a perfectly still day, this hummingbird was caught in the suspended instant between arrival and departure. I distorted the air around its outstretched wing to reveal what the eye cannot normally see—the force, motion, and energy left in the wake of a single wingbeat.

02
Carefree Cardinal
Caught from my front porch, a female Northern cardinal pauses atop a fence post with her crest raised and the sunlight warming the red hidden among her soft brown feathers. Alert but seemingly untroubled, she carries herself with the quiet confidence that gave Carefree Cardinal its name.

03
Arkansas Oriole
A male Baltimore oriole takes on an elaborate fruit-and-jelly feeder in my aunt and uncle’s hilltop yard in Arkansas. Surrounded by its glowing orange framework, the bright visitor seems to have discovered both a meal and a puzzle - another unexpected encounter waiting close to home.

04
The Pelican Brief
The Pelican Brief places a bold blue pelican at the edge of a quiet Arkansas pond, reflected in dark water beneath glowing amber reeds. Two distant birds keep watch along the shoreline, adding depth and a sense of quiet company. Cool blues and warm golds transform the familiar pond into a slightly mysterious world where an ordinary visitor becomes the central character.

05
Cuban Fan Butterfly
Cuban Fan Butterfly began with a decorative fan discovered in a resale shop in Wickes, Arkansas. It was meant to become a gift for a friend, but its curved shape and spreading panels suggested something more—a butterfly waiting to emerge. Set against richly textured rust, the familiar object becomes a luminous winged creature, capturing the Farmstracts practice of looking again and finding beauty beyond an object’s original purpose.

A dark, spotted butterfly pauses beside a small stone on a warm, textured surface. Its folded wings rise above a long shadow, turning an easily missed encounter into a quiet study of delicacy and stillness. A Brief Landing captures one of nature’s temporary visitors during the few moments it chose to remain.

08
Fata Morgana
Photographed from my front porch, *Fata Morgana* draws together two fleeting hummingbird encounters around a glowing feeder at dusk. Suspended between motion and stillness, the birds seem to appear like a mirage within the fading Arkansas light.

Dog & Butterfly
From a photograph of my own dog, this quiet moment was reimagined with AI - a monarch butterfly settling gently on his nose. The result captures that sweet intersection of curiosity, patience, and the small wonders animals seem to notice before we do.
